Wesley and Braun looked forward to learning more than just combat this year; Orie, on the other hand, wanted nothing more than to train and fight all day. Altara’s Academy was not only famous for producing the most skilled knights in Merari, but it also offered instruction in magic, military tactics, and war strategy. After years as pages, today marked the beginning of their journey as squires.
As they approached the castle’s gate, the passageway was alive with the bustle of people moving here and there. The crowd parted, and Aldous appeared. The torchlight flickered on his face, matching his intense mood. He quickly approached and punched Wesley’s arm. “There’s the big hunter.”
Wesley stumbled back, surprised. “What was that for?”
Aldous pointed at the group, “The lot of you are first years now,” he said, before pausing. Then, in a slow voice, he added, “You answer to me.”
Wesley remembered the first time he saw Aldous’s First Squire Pin a few days ago; he didn’t realize the impact it would have. Everyone knew he’d earned the top honor through more than his family name; he excelled at everything. Why that brilliance turned into spite toward everyone younger was a mystery.
Orie was about to step between them, but Wesley raised an arm to stop him and did something unexpected. He bowed to Aldous. “Yes, First Squire.”
Aldous’s anger faded, and he looked surprised. But his scowl returned just as fast, and he slapped Braun on the shoulder.
"The next time any of you whelps fail to call me First Squire, I'll throw you off the ramparts," he threatened. But everyone knew he was just bluffing, since the ramparts could be seen from almost anywhere in the castle. The high walls looked out over the land and were important for the castle’s defense.
He left before anyone could say anything, slipping back into the crowd.
Orie was the first to break the silence. “That could have been worse.”
Wesley shook his head. “He just needs something to be mad at. You know how he is.”
Orie managed a little smile, “I’m up for pitching him off the ramparts.”
Wesley almost laughed. “No. I’d rather not have to scrub them clean after.”
Braun adjusted his satchel and smiled, while Orie seemed disappointed that his idea was not well-received. Wesley felt reassured by their relaxed demeanor, but Aldous remained in the back of his mind. Wesley believed that as long as they were there for each other, they could manage any challenge that came their way.
